Vitor Belfort Starches Hendo With Another Headkick
by Dr. Octagon, J.D.
In the battle of former TRT users at UFC Fight Night 77, 38-year-old Vitor Belfort smoked the 45-year-old Dan Henderson with a blistering head kick in the first strike of the fight, a redux of their previous encounter.
Belfort landed a punch or two as well and followed Henderson to the ground for some coffin nails before referee Mario Yamasaki stopped it. The stoppage looked a little early, but honestly, Dan was just going to sustain a bit more brain damage if the fight continued. Dan Henderson is an all-time great, but he’s lost six of his last eight fights and doesn’t look like he has enough in the tank to compete with top-10 middleweights.
In the co-main event, former barista (and the man who made Daniel Cormier cry) Patrick Cummins had nothing for Glover Teixeira apart from a few takedowns. Glover put a savage beating on Cummins before referee Herb Dean called the fight off in the second while Cummins was still on his feet but looking heavily concussed.
Thomas Almeida looked fantastic putting a one-sided beatdown on Anthony Birchak before a KO at the end of the first round.
Alex Oliveira KOed Piotr Hallman in the third, while Rashid Magomedov and Corey Anderson both won by lopsided decisions.
It was a thrilling card overall, full of action and commercials featuring Ronda Rousey and a bunch of hype for the Rousey-Holly Holm fight that I am just not excited about. I’ve seen Holly Holm fight and don’t see a path to victory for her other than a miracle. The UFC seems to be setting Ronda up for another sub-one minute fight.
