The UFC has a free card tonight on FX to get you psyched up for the free card tomorrow. Hell yeah. Lock and load.

Unfortunately Jon Anik and Kenny Florian are calling this shit from Down Under. If you’re one of those that think the typical Australian is a dumb, drunk, racist lout, imagine an arena full of Australian MMA fans. Terrifying.

Hector Lombard was hyped as a big-time contender, until losing his first fight in the octagon against Tim Boetsch by decision, in a fight where he failed to push the action. On the other hand, he’s really nice at steam-rolling tomato cans.

Rousimar Palhares is an abusrdly muscular middleweight with the most-feared leglocks in MMA. He either wins by leglock or does something stupid and loses, most memorably in his fight against Nate Marquardt. Palhares tried to submit Marquardt, Marquardt slipped out and Palhares stayed on his back. He lay there, protesting that Marquardt was greased, only to get savagely pummeled by Marquardt (who was cleanly shaven, but not greased). I don’t know how you say protect yourself at all times in Portuguese, but someone should have told Palhares. Maybe he and Victor Ortiz should be friends.

Joe Martinez is on the mic, Bruce Buffer is probably doing tomorrow’s event. Both of these middleweights are enormous men. Live updates after the jump:[[MORE]]

Round 1: Kick from Lombard. Palhares kicks his leg. The fighters lock up, Lombard throws and misses. Big leg kick from Palhares. Lombard punches. Lombard is throwing haymakers. Leg kick from Palhares. Knee from Palhares. Lombard lands a shot.

Palhares throws a kick, eats a left, and goes down on his ass. Lombard doesn’t fall into his guard, lets him stand instead. Head kick and a punch from Lombard. Lombard is teeing off on Palhares. Lombard lands a flurry of punches and Palhares is badly hurt. But Lombard is in his guard. so watch for a leglock attempt once Rousimar gets his wits about him.

Lombard is asking to be stood up. He finally realizes that he can just stand up. Palhares keeps kicking and catching punches. Lombard pops him with a right and swarms. Lombard throws a series of haymakers and lands a left hook, followed by a right hook and an uppercut. Palhares is down, Lombard lands a few more shots on the ground before the ref steps in to stop the fight.

Lombard by Knockout. That is what people expected when he came into the UFC. Palhares did not have the standup to hang with Lombard, who basically just walked through his leg kicks and threw massive haymakers until the fight was over. Palhares should probably have shot before he got his ass knocked out. His only hope was to try to get the fight to the ground and hope that Lombard tired out, but Rousimar’s not exactly known for tactical savvy.

Lombard wants Michael Bisping. That would be a good matchup for him.
