UFC 155 Live: Melvin Guillard vs Jamie Varner

Melvin Guillard is talented, but often seems to find a way to lose. Jamie Varner has looked good since his return to the UFC. Both fighters are inconsistent. This fight was supposed to happen two weeks ago, but Varner was puking his guts out before the show. Live updates after the jump:[[MORE]]

Round 1: Leg kick from Guillard, then another. Another leg kick from Melvin. Leg kick from Melvin again. Melvin thinks about throwing a big kick, but decides not to. Leg kick from Varner. The crowd boos. Varner swarms, but doesn’t land. Head kick from Varner is blocked. Melvin swarms and it looks like he got hit with a glancing blow. Not much offense from either guy so far.

Leg kick from Melvin. Head kick from Melvin is blocked. Varner swings and misses. Melvin lands a leg kick. Melvin comes forward, but Varner retreats. Melvin lands a leg kick. Varner throws a combination, which misses. He goes for a takedown, no luck. Leg kick from Melvin. Jamie swings, not sure if he landed. Pair of punches land for Jamie. Bodyshot by Varner; he lands a right to the body and a left, Melvin is hurt. Varner whiffs and Melvin is able to survive, but he falls down. Varner is looking for the finish, he attempts a guillotine choke as the round ends.

Round 2: Jamie lands a right. Leg kick by Melvin. Varner swings and misses. Varner swarms and gets the takedown, but Melvin is sitting up on the fence. Jamie postures up and jumps on Melvin’s back, but Melvin flips him off and goes for a guillotine of his own. Melvin lands a knee as they break. Melvin lands a jab. Melvin lands a leg kick. Melvin with a big kick to the face, but Jamie lands a punch.

Melvin lands several jabs and is starting to look comfortable. Melvin keeps jabbing. Jamie whiffs on some punches. Varner comes in and lands a hook. Melvin lands a nice uppercut. Jamie shoots for the takedown and Melvin is sitting up against the cage. Varner trying to flatten him out. Melvin trying to walk up the wall. Melvin lands a big left. Melvin lands a pair of jabs. Jabs and leg kicks from Guillard, who is looking good.

Jamie lands a big straight right. Melvin lands a jab, then another. Melvin lands a body kick and then takes a hard one to the balls. They just bleeped out whatever he just said. The foot looked like it caught his balls and his whole grundle as well. Ouch. Two punches by Melvin. Melvin lands a flying knee as the round ends.

Round 3: Melvin thows a wild jump kick. Jamie shoots, Melvin punches him and gets out of it. Melvin with a kick to the head that is blocked. Melvin keeps landing jabs. Varner grabs the legs and gets another takedown. Varner goes for a Peruvian necktie; Melvin throws him off and is in his guard. Jamie’s leg is bleeding really badly. Never seen that before

Right hand by Melvin, who is on top. Knee to the body by Melvin as Varner stands up. Varner shoots and gets the takedown; Melvin is stting up against the cage and sucking wind. Two minutes left and Melvin is not pushing the action. Varner shoots and gets the takedown. Melvin goes for an armbar, but Varner gets out of it. Melvin looking for a choke, Varner throws him off and is back on top. Guillard gets him off, but still isn’t pushing. Guillard is tired.

Varner is pushing the action, but he eats a knee to the body. Jamie picks Melvin up on his back and drops him on his head. Melvin jumps on him and hugs him. Guillard seems happy to have lost that fight.

I’ve got it 29-28 Varner, but that first round was close.  f a judge was a big fan of leg kicks, Melvin could have taken it.

Judges score it 30-27 Varner, 30-27 Guillard, and 30-27 Varner. Split decision for Varner.

What the fuck? I don’t know how that happened. One of the judges must have been drunk and checked the wrong boxes. This has to stop.

If you told me one year ago that Jamie Varner would beat Melvin Guillard, I’d have told you that you were crazy. Really great resurgence for the fighter that was sick to his stomach two weeks ago. He would have felt a lot sicker if the last judge had scored it for Guillard.
