The “Pit Bull” from Baltimore Tim Coleman announced his arrival in a crowded junior welterweight decision on Friday’s ShoBox with a third-round knockout of Venezuelan veteran Patrick Lopez. Lopez looked poised to present a formidable challenge coming off his dismantling of undefeated prospect Prenice Brewer in August, but found himself wanting against Coleman’s combination of skill and surprising pop.

Despite only having four knockouts coming into the fight Coleman showed the results of his work with trainer Roger Mayweather by flooring “El Elegante” twice, the second time with a stunning right that knocked the 33-year-old silly. Utilizing the counter-punching style common to many in the Mayweather camp Coleman found himself the recipient of a few sharp blows to the body from Lopez but never looked to be in any  serious danger.

Lopez, however, appeared over-matched early despite a fight that suited his straightforward style. The punch that ended the affair was a moment worth framing - Coleman evading a lunge from Lopez and timing the uppercut perfectly to catch his exposed chin. Afterward Coleman appeared jubilant, hoping perhaps for a shot at one of the division’s several rising stars. His newly found television appeal could make him an attractive opponent for Victor Ortiz on the undercard of the Amir Khan-Marcos Maidana fight.

Lopez, on the other hand, didn’t know what hit him. Like many in the audience and watching the fight from home, he didn’t seem to think his opponent capable of the punch that ended his evening.
