25-year-old prospect Humberto Tapia Armenta was shot by promoter Adolfo Huerta Salcio at a Tijuana gym on Tuesday, March 29.

From the San Diego Reader:

According to police, the shooting occurred at approximately 6 p.m., after the promoter voiced his suspicions that the young boxer was messing around with his wife. Hot words were exchanged and a punchfest ensued, according to witnesses. The situation seemed to calm, but the promoter subsequently produced a pistol and shot the boxer in the abdomen.

Cruz Roja paramedics arrived at the scene and attempted to transport Tapia Armenta to a hospital, but he died in transit. Police arrived next and the witnesses pointed out Huerta Salcido as perp. He was arrested and taken in for arraignment on murder charges.

According to BoxRec Armenta lost ten of his last twelve fights but went the distance in all but one, a September 2008 loss to Hector Sanchez at junior welterweight. He went the distance with WBA lightweight belt-holder Brandon Rios in December 2006, along with as Danny Garcia, Rock Allen and Carlos Molina, losing by points in every bout.

All told Armenta compiled a record of 15-16-1 with 8 KOs and the one stoppage loss to Sanchez. Anyone that has lasted eight rounds with the likes of Rios must be respected as a game and capable fighter. R.I.P.
