This Weekend Might Be the Worst Weekend of MMA Ever
Or I may be unduly pessimistic because I’m watching the World Series of Fighting right now.
The event is so bad that Melvin Guillard couldn’t even be bothered to show up to do PR. It’s so bad that they played the Steve Mocco-Julian Coutinho fight back-to-back. I don’t know how the World Series of Fighting is making money. There are empty seats in the first few rows at Foxwoods, which is a tiny arena and I doubt they’re getting paid a lot of money to be shown on NBCSN, a channel I didn’t know exist until I used the search function on my cable box tonight.
I’m also told that there was a one hour break between the untelevised preliminary card and the main card. I just finished watching the fake super hero Phoenix Jones get held down for three rounds. Just shitty. Ray Sefo must have been kicked in the head too may times if he thinks this is a viable product.
Milford’s finest, the one-handed wonder, Nick Newell provided some solid action, but then Jesse McElligott, who is literally the same height and weight as me but flabbier (which is bad because I sit on my ass and type for a living) got his ass whooped by David Branch. I mean McElligott was a late replacement, but whenever you see anyone that flabbed out who isn’t a heavyweight, you know they don’t stand a chance.
As a highly paid MMA correspondent, the next thing that I have to do is watch the Bellator event, which has a decent headliner in Will Brooks vs. Dave Jansen, but the quality drops off rapidly after that. Bellator actually put on 13 fights tonight, but many of them were untelevised.
Then there is the UFC’s crap card tomorrow, which is headlined by a Gabriel Gonzaga vs. Mirko Cro Cop rematch. Cro Cop really wouldn’t be in the UFC right now if it wasn’t for the name he made for himself in the golden age of Pride. He’s 40 years old and has been in some wars.
I’m not saying I’m not going to watch every minute of it, but I would say that there are more fights between guys outside of the Top 15 this weekend than any other weekend that I can remember. Three top-to-bottom garbage cards from the three biggest MMA promotions around. I’m sure I’ll get plenty of emails to the Stiff Jab mailbox disputing this, but I really can’t remember a weekend with more crappy televised fights.
Are there any fights you can watch this weekend that aren’t between unranked bums? NBC has a boxing match between Danny Garcia and Lamont Peterson. That’s the best fight going off this weekend. You should watch that. Also, there was a sick knockout in the Dennis/Cojanu match tonight that I’ll be posting shortly.
