Shane Carwin vs. Junior Dos Santos

June 11th, 2011 11:42pm by Stiff Jab Tumblr

This fight should be over in about two minutes: one minute to feel each other out, one minute of furious punching. However, it might be one of those fights where you think it is going to end really quick and turns into a boring decision.

Carwin is coming off of surgery and was supposed to have a tune-up fight with gynecomastia-afflicted Einemo, but instead he gets a fight with the hard-punching Dos Santos. Carwin a sick wrestler, D-2 champion and a sharp guy, we wouldn’t be surprised if he tried taking Dos Santos down. We’ve never seen Dos Santos on the ground before.

Dos Santos probably has sharper technique, but Carwin, who has been reportedly linked to a steroid investigation, is the more powerful puncher. Dos Santos has never fought anyone who isn’t a total chump. The best fighter he has faced is the burger king brawler, Roy Nelson.

We like Carwin in this fight, but who knows what he is going to be like after his surgery. Dos Santos could just as easily pick him apart.

Holy shit, I just noticed that  Buffer is wearing a vomit-inducing tuxedo along with a regular tie.  He looks like he is going to the prom in the seventies. Round-by-round updates after the jump:

Round 1-Carwin goes for the takedown. Good strategy because no one has ever seen Junior on his back. Carwin doesn’t get the takedown and they go back to not punching each other. Maybe someone should try a leg kick.

Carwin is known to be gassed after one round so maybe he is trying to save his energy.  Carwin goes for the takedown but it doesn’t really go anywhere. Santos is sort of scoring with the jab. Junior catches Carwin and gets his ass beat for a minute straight.  Dos Santos is looking at Herb Dean while he punches Carwin, as if to beg him to stop the fight in the first round.

Herb Dean is going to let Shane hang in there, charitable refereeing, but we like it.  Jesus Christ he is a bloody mess. Dos Santos probably landed 50 punches that round.

10-8 Dos Santos. The judge giving out all the 10-8s probably gave out a 10-7, never seen one of those before.

Round 2-Carwin still tentative. He’s lost a lot of blood. Pretty weak round so far.

Carwin lands two leg kicks and the commentators make a big deal of it.  Those aren’t doing shit. Shane eating jabs. Needs to be more aggressive, chases Junior and lands a few. Carwin lands a nice right. Carwin needs to get moving. He’s way behind right now.

Dos santos with a leg kick, which Carwin blocked.  Carwin still eating jabs.

10-9 Dos Santos.

Round 3-Carwin’s corner said not to blow his nose so as not to swell his eye. Carwin works the takedown, but Junior gets back up. Carwin is dangerous against the cage, but Dos Santos is able to get away. Carwin needs to get moving, but can’t seem to land a shot.

Two minutes left and Carwin still isn’t trying to win this one. Junior is stalking him around the ring and putting the jab into his mouth at will. Herb Dean stops the round with one minute left to get a doctor to look at Carwin’s fucked up face. It has looked like that pretty much the whole fight. Carwin gets a nice break, hopefully will push the pace when he gets back in it because there is only a minute left.

Dos Santos with a takedown. Someone needs to tell these guys that Dana doesn’t give out any cash for the decision of the night. What a boring bunch of fights.

30-26 Dos Santos by our scoring.

Judges score it 30-27 30-27 20-26 for Dos Santos. They really need to standardize the 10-8 round. Sort of weird when only one judge uses it.

Junior says, “Be careful, my opponents.” Love that.  Junior thanks God for the win.
