Ronda Rousey vs Liz Carmouche
by Dr. Octagon, J.D.
This is the first women’s fight in UFC history.
The mainstream media knows more about Ronda Rousey than about just about any other MMA fighter, male or female. She’s won an Olympic medal in Judo, though the fact she’s pretty and really works her ass off with the media doesn’t hurt. Rousey always wins in the first round by armbar. I like Rousey, but we’ve never seen her past the first round, and I don’t think we’ve ever really seen her get hit either.
Liz Carmouche is a former marine and looks pretty jacked, so maybe she’ll be able to hit Rousey before Ronda can get the armbar locked in. Or maybe Carmouche is prepared to defend armbar attempts. Generally Rousey just walks through some punches, gets a takedown, and gets an armbar. Announcer Joe Rogan notes Carmouche has been practicing defending armbars. I’d like to think that everyone who has fought Ronda has practiced evading armbars, since you know it’s coming.
Carmouche has a rainbow mouthguard and is openly gay. As personable as Ronda seems when she does her press appearances, she looks mean as hell when she walks out. All she’s thinking is about ripping Liz Carmouche’s arm off. Live updates after the jump: [[MORE]]
Round 1: Ronda grabs Liz, but Liz is punching. Ronda drags Liz to the ground and is on top. Carmouche is on Ronda’s back. This is the most trouble we’ve ever seen Ronda in. Carmouche with the face crank. Ronda pulls her legs apart, shakes her off, and takes an upkick to the breast. Rousey readjusts her Lululemon bra.
Carmouche is on her back. Ronda lands a punch. Ronda falls into the guard and is on top again in side control. Ronda has a headlock and is punching Carmouche. This is like Brock Lesnar-Frank Mir. Ronda is just popping Carmouche in the head repeatedly. Carmouche is bleeding really badly and is trying to triangle from the bottom. Ronda steps over and grabs the arm, with 45 seconds left to work. Ronda gets the arm and ends it by armbar again. Great fight.
Ronda and Carmouche delivered the goods, whereas the light heavyweights danced around like bums. Great inaugural fight for women’s MMA. Carmouche acquitted herself pretty well in defeat.
