Rick Story vs Charlie Brenneman

Charlie “the Spaniard” Brenneman filling in for Marquardt, who failed his medical for undisclosed reasons. Rick Story is coming off an impressive victory three weeks ago against enormous welterweight Thiago Alves.

Brenneman is a former Spanish teacher and Pros vs. Joes alum. Brenneman was a good wrestler in college and could give Story trouble if he can take it to the ground. It would be a huge upset if Brenneman wins this one. Round-by-round scoring after the jump:

Round 1-Brenneman shoots but Story sends him flying with a judo throw. Brenneman is back up and Story pushes him up against the cage. Brenneman pushes Story up against the cage and the ref allows what looks like a totally unblocked shot directly to the testicles delivered by Story.

Story now pushes Brenneman up against the cage and Brenneman lands a right when they disengage. Brenneman gets Story’s back in the scramble. Brenneman lands a straight right and gets the takedown.

In half guard looking to pass. Brenneman passes guard into side control. Going for an arm triangle and Story re-establishes guard. Story going for the standup, but Brenneman keeps throwing punches. Story is holding Charlie tight and minimizing the damage he is taking. Brenneman tries to posture up, but Story pulls him back down.

The Spaniard takes the first 10-9 no question. Story is going to have to take the next two or finish the fight.

Round 2-Brenneman gets the takedown to start the round. Story tries for a North-South choke but is unable to get it. Back to the feet. Story comes in with a knee and lands it. He has Brenneman up against the cage. Story lands a nice left as they disengage and scores another takedown.

Story is in damage-control mode and is trying to attack with heels to the body of Brenneman. Brenneman has good conditioning and isn’t letting up from the top position. Story goes for a guillotine, but Brenneman moves to side control to reduce the leverage.

Story is still cranking on the neck and trying to land it from half guard. Brenneman landing elbows to the body as Story lets go of the neck. Brenneman passes guard and improves position to side control before Story gets him back in the full guard to end the round.

10-9 Brenneman. These Pennsylvania wrestlers are fucking tough. This would be a huge win for Brenneman and we wouldn’t be surprised if he played it safe in the third and got caught.

Story is going to need to end it in the third to get the win so expect him to be moving forward. Brenneman is going to have to land a few more takedowns to get the decision.

Round 3-Story comes out swinging and Brenneman goes for the takedown. Charlie gets a single leg as they go to the ground. Story is looking for a kimura. Brenneman is putting weight on his arm to keep the arm in there. Now it looks like he has his hands locked together.

The ref is threatening to stand them up and Brenneman realy caught a break because Story could have turned that into a submission for sure. Brenneman getting caught but he shoots again. Story trying for a triangle from the top in the scramble. Brenneman tries to posture up, and Story flips him for a traditional triangle.  Brenneman moves out of it and Story is again going for the reverse triangle. Really nice battle on the ground.

The ref is still giving them shit for not working but they are really competing and Brenneman almost gets up. Story is on top, but Brenneman is sitting up against the cage. Not a terrible position. Story has the full mount and is trying to slam Brenneman off him. Brenneman holding on for dear life. If he can survive another minute he has it.

Brenneman will not let go. Story must have slammed him 15 times. Story practically standing up and Brenneman flips him. Nice technique on the ground. Story is going for another Kimura with twenty seconds left but it looks like he’s way too tired to make anything of it. Brenneman remains on top and rides the round out.

No doubt the Spaniard won that one. Every single round of it. Really nice victory for the underdog.

Judges score it 29-28 Brenneman. Not sure which round went to Story.  Fucking baffling. Brenneman was on top for the whole fight. Goes to show that the judging is still a big problem.

Bad loss for Story. Needs to work on his takedown defense for the next fight.
