New and Nifty at Stiff Jab: The Eight Count! Thiago Silva, DMX-George Zimmerman

Today we’re kicking off a new weekly feature: “The Eight Count”, a Friday news roundup. It’ll be a smorgasbord of link-y goodness, highlighting stories we think you’ll enjoy. 1) Stay classy, TMZ. Under a tempting teaser for an unrelated story which includes the phrase, “Check out my hot Butt Crack”, we find a darker post: “UFC Star Thiago Silva Arrested for Attempted Murder Accused Wife of Affair, Shoved Gun in Her Mouth”. Yeesh.
2) You’ve probably already heard about this clusterfuck, but in case you missed it, here’s some serious tomfoolery from SPIN: “DMX Reiterates He Will Beat George Zimmerman’s Ass”. DMX (arf arf arf!) hasn’t signed anything though, so this may go nowhere…which wouldn’t be a bad thing, considering:
DMX was chosen from a pool of 15,000 applicants eager to spar with Zimmerman, organizers revealed on February 5 (which would’ve been Trayvon Martin’s 19th birthday — an extra detail that makes this tabloid-baiting bout even more tasteless).
3) Our friends at The Queensberry Rules have a fascinating look at boxing history, specifically a 1908 bout in San Francisco between Sam Lanford, who was black and Jim Flynn, who was white. A sample to whet your appetite: [[MORE]]
Prior to his first bout against Jack Johnson, Flynn was quoted as saying “There isn’t a nigger living who can lick me.” In that fight, he was knocked out in the 11th round, right after spitting some more hateful venom. While in training for the bout at Shannon’s Villa, Flynn painted a racially offensive picture of Langford on his heavy bag.
4) There was a special press conference at the U.S. Capitol about the Cleveland Clinic’s ongoing study on head trauma in boxing and MMA fighters. Our esteemed founder wrote one take for his day job: “Reid, McCain Join Forces to Show Support for ‘Fighter’ Study”…
5) …while our Managing Editor whipped up this piece for Ring Magazine: “Fighters, promoters, politicians unite at conference on head injuries”. Literally “he said, she said”!

8) This isn’t super recent, but it’s on our radar anyway for obvious reasons, via Jezebel. “Evander Holyfield is Your Latest Anti-Gay Celebrity Bigot”:
While appearing on the UK’s Celebrity Big Brother, Evander Holyfield told a housemate that gay people make a “choice” to be “handicapped” and should be fixed by a doctor because the Bible.
