There aren’t any good fights on television Saturday night, but if you’re in Washington you can check out friend of the blog Tim Starks holding forth on the scholarly side of the Sweet Science as part of Nerd Nite at DC9.

Full details and Tim’s bio after the jump. In addition to his other impressive credentials, he’s also one of the columnists for our inaugural edition of the Stiff Jab Fight Book:

The Sweet Science: What’s So Smart About Getting Punched In The Face?

Most nerds don’t associate anything pleasant with fisticuffs, having spent a lot of time on the wrong side of fights as youths. But during boxing’s modern era, some prominent scholarly/artistic writer-types have become enraptured with the sport; more than a few smart people have inhabited professional pugilism; and there’s great intelligence to be found in the practice of boxing itself. I’ll walk you through the places where mind and body intersect in a sport that is often regarded as mere brutality by its detractors, but that its bards refer to as “the sweet science.”

Bio: Tim Starks is the founder of The Queensberry Rules, which Gawker has deemed “THE best boxing blog.” He also has written about boxing for such myriad publications as The Ring – “The Bible of Boxing” – and Bookforum. By day, he writes about spies and terrorists for Congressional Quarterly. He has been threatened with death by more than one reader of his blog, and has been called a “crackhead” on national television.
