Mark Munoz vs. Demian Maia

June 11th, 2011 10:30pm by Stiff Jab Tumblr

Demian Maia also punches like a girl, but is sick at the BJJ. Mark Munoz is a beast. If Munoz is smart, he’ll stand and trade.

This is a bad matchup for Maia. We’re expecting a repeat of the Cerrone fight, but with Munoz winning by KO because he isn’t a candy-ass strategical Greg Jackson fighter who wants that sweet sweet “KO of the night” money.

Done with dinner and switching to scotch. Lack of coherence is a strong possibility. Updates after the jump:

Round 1-Looks like Maia caught Munoz with something as Munoz’s legs wobbled, but it didn’t look like a solid punch. Maia going for a takedown, but he isn’t able to take down the stronger man.

Drinking an 18 year-old Lagavulin that it is totally excellent. Maia’s striking looks good and Munoz wants none of it. Jeez. That’s unexpected. Munoz just landed a pretty clean shot to Demian’s chin, but Maia shook it off. Munoz chasing Maia around the ring, but not doing anything.

10-9 Maia due to effective striking. Wow. Did not expect to be writing that.

Round 2-Maia gets caught and runs away like a coward. Munoz gets Maia down and is murdering his body and controlling him from the top. Mai trying to pull guard, but just ends up standing up.

Munoz with another vicious shot to the face. Maia shoots again, lands body punches.  Munoz goes for a Darce chock. That was a fucking mistake.  Maia got out of it and gets Munoz in his guard, but Munoz is able to stand.

Munoz punching Maia in the butt, the Phillipino deadleg machine. Maia trying to pull guard. Munoz is in Maia’s guard with two minutes to go, but is still punching the body. Maia back to his feet, but he is fucked up.

Maia goes for a Guillotine, but Munoz is out of it and is on top. Nice elbows from the top, Maia nowhere near pulling guard and is trying to sit up on the fence while Munoz punches him. Maia isn’t even defending, just trying to wait out the round. They stop working and are stood up to end the round.

10-9 Munoz, finally controlling the fight like we expected. The judge who gave a 10-8 to Cerrone might have given Munoz 10-8 here. That was way more dominant than any round Cerrone had.

Round 3-Fight is tied by our count, so we should see a good third round. Fighters hug it out in the beginning of the fight, that was weird, but at least it was not mid-round like Pat Barry pulled with Mirko Cro cop.

Nice right by Maia. Munoz is shooting. That was a bad idea, don’t know why he is doing that, but we guess he isn’t afraid of Maia’s subs. Munoz should be standing and swinging.

Maia has Muno’s back and is doing some weirdass BJJ move, no idea what he is doing but it looks like a crucifix. Joe Rogan says Munoz is in trouble, but Munoz stands up and pins Maia to the fence. These fuckers are just holdin each other, both men totally tired. The ref should really break them up, but they are sort of working and we’ve never seen this dude before so he takes a long fucking time to split them up.

Maia lands a nice left jab. Munoz comes back with his own body shot. Munoz throws Maia down, but he pops up. This fight is fucking close, they should really be working a little harder.  aia shoots, apparently he thinks he can land a sub with 8 seconds left.  Munoz pops up.

That round sucked, but we’re giving it to Munoz who did a little more. Almost a draw. Munoz won the second by far more than Maia won the first though so if we were judging we’d give him the close third and the fight.

Judges score it 29-28 29-28 and 30-27. Looks like we were right and the judge who was loose with the 10-8 scores probably gave another one out. Good fight. Munoz should get a title shot soon. We like his style.
