Round 1: Chris Weidman shoots, perfectly timed, and has side control on Mark Munoz with 4:20 to go. Bad spot to be in this early in the round. Munoz works back up to his feet. Weidman has a head lock and lands a pair of knees to the head of Munoz. Weidman has a front headlock and is controlling Munoz well. Weidman has a guillotine, but lets it go and lands some elbows.
Weidman is trying to get an arm loose, but isn’t able to now he’s back with the front headlock. Weidman goes to the full mount and is trying for the guillotine, back into the full mount, but Munoz is out. Weidman jumps back on Munoz and has his back. Munoz is on the feet and the crowd is chanting for him, as Weidman knees him in the butt. The round ends.
Round 2: Weidman shoots the single and has side control again. Crowd is booing, but this fight has been great so far. Munoz rolls out and escapes, he’s moving forward. Munoz throws a sloppy punch and walks into a sharp elbow from Weidman. Munoz looks like he is out, with blood pouring from his head, but the ref lets Weidman land another 17 punches (I rewound and counted them). Sickening. Terrible refereeing. They just showed the replay of that elbow. That was some next level stuff. Couldn’t have been timed better.
Weidman by elbow and way too many punches at 1:37 of the second round.
I don’t know whether Mark Munoz was off or Weidman is just that good, but I did not expect such a dominant victory. Weidman looks like he has improved a ton since his last fight. Just the other day I was saying that I don’t think either of these guys could give Anderson Silva much trouble, but if Weidman can work a shot like that against Anderson, he could have a good chance. A wrestler with the ability to take a fight to the ground is always dangerous, and that elbow was sharp. He might have just earned himself a title shot.
