Jon Jones vs Vitor Belfort
by Dr. Octagon, J.D.
Vitor Belfort needs to swarm Jon Jones immediately. It’s the only way he’s going to have a puncher’s chance of winning the fight. Vitor’s been training with Rashad Evans, who hopefully told him not to try and pick apart Jones from the outside.
Vitor is very well known in MMA, but his record really isn’t that great. He’s also a middleweight and looked old at the weigh-ins. If a guy like him got the title shot in any other weight class, all the other contenders would be bitching. The fact they aren’t shows they’re just hoping someone can beat Jones.
I’ve talked a lot of smack about the stupid things Jones has been saying and doing recently, but he’s never done anything stupid in the ring to this point. He should be well prepared for this fight, and if Vitor is to somehow pull off a victory here, it might be the greatest upset in the history of mixed martial arts. Jones has never been hit really hard, due to the fact he is so dominant. We’ll see if Vitor can close the distance. Live updates after the jump:[[MORE]]
Round 1: Vitor just threw a kick at Jones when he crawled in. Vitor isn’t charging, which is a mistake. Vitor throws a kick. Jon shoots, Vitor goes for a guillotine, but Jon is now down and in his guard. Belfort is holding on for dear life. Jones is trying to slam him loose. Vitor locks in an armbar. Jones is trying to slam out of it, and Jones does it. Wow. Vitor almost just won the fight right there.
Jones is back on top. Crowd is chanting Vitor’s name. Jones is working his trademark elbows from inside the guard and Vitor’s face is busted up. Vitor again goes for an armbar. Vitor is cut really badly. So many elbows. Vitor’s got a vicious gash over his right eye, that I suspect it could stop the fight once they wash it out. Jones keeps hitting that gash. Vitor is taking a beating, but he’s going for an armbar again as Jones stands up. Jones throws a hatchet kick and then falls into the guard as the round ends.
Jones looks tired. The doctor is checking Belfort’s eye out and says he is good to go.
Round 2: Vitor throws a big head kick. Vitor swinging. Jones lands a right. Jones landing the front kick to the knee. Jones throws a spinning elbow, but misses it. Vitor throws a big head kick. Doesn’t seem to be too worried about getting taken down. Jones is throwing that front kick a lot. Vitor coming forward swinging. Jones is snapping off leg kicks.
Jon throws two wild hooks that miss. Jones with a front kick to the face and a side kick to the leg. Jon drops his hands and comes forward swinging. Vitor lands a right hook. Jones lands a left hook and Vitor pulled guard. That’s fucking insane man. He must not remember the first round. Jones lands another elbow. Belfort sinks in a triangle as the round ends, but it is too late.
10-9 Jones, but Vitor has already come closer to beating Jones than anyone else (except Matt Hamill). Jones looks sweatier than vintage Patrick Ewing.
Round 3: Jones is still throwing that front kick. Jones lands a head kick. Jones throws a side kick. Jones throws a leg kick. He eats a right. Jones kick to the body and Vitor falls down hurt, Jon climbs in his guard. He’ll have to try to sink a submission from his back again. Jones lets Vitor stand up.
Vitor could be an extra in a George Romero film right now. Vitor lands a left. Vitor keeps throwing the left, but Jon is keeping his hand in front of his face. Vitor clinches up with Jones and pulls guard again. Fucking savage. Jon passes to half guard. Jon is mashing elbows, but Vitor gets back to full guard.
10-9 Jones. This is still a one-sided beating, but way more competitive than I thought it would be.
Round 4: Vitor is still throwing head kicks. Vitor pulls guard again, Jones has his arm trapped under his leg and is landing elbows. Jones sinks in the Americana and Vitor taps.
Jones wins by submission. Great fight as always from Jon Jones. Jones shouts out the 607 area code. Ithaca, N.Y. Motherfucker. I’m out.
