MASHANTUCKET, Conn.–Mrs. Octagon, M.B.A. is killing it on the blackjack table right now. This is for the vacant WBC featherweight championship. Promoter Lou DiBella was talking up the Dominican Fortuna as the next big thing at featherweight last year. Brian Urlacher is ringside and looks gigantic in person. The theater is starting to fill up.
(Editor’s note: See here for previous coverage of Fortuna, including an interview with manager Sampson Lewkowicz–GN)
Round 1-Both fighters throwing bombs right off the bat. Fortuna is lunging in throwing huge hooks. Fortuna is warned for a punch to the back of the head at the end of the round, but he won that one for sure.[[MORE]]
Round 2- Fortuna is chasing Wilson around the ring, but neither fighter does a lot of damage. I guess Fortuna took that one.
Round 3-Wilson is on the offensive now. Lands a few solid lefts. Fortuna has him up by the ropes, punishes the body and scores a knockdown with a right hook to the grill.
Wilson takes the standing eight and Fortuna is back in for the kill swinging wildly. Wilson slips, but the ref lets him get back up. He’s hurt now and on the defensive. Fortuna is battering him, but they tie up. Fortuna pushes Wilson back with his glove and then tees off on him as the round ends. Nice round for Fortuna.
Round 4- Both fighters tentative at first. Wilson comes back with some offense, but not much happens. Fortuna looks gassed.
Round 5- Wild swings by both fighters as the round opesn. Fortuna looks like he got the better of the exchanges. Wilson slips. I think Fortuna took that one too.
Round 6-Uneventful so far. Fortuna slips. Fortuna caught Wilson hard near the end of the round for another knockdown.
Round 7-Wilson catches Fortuna with two straight punches, but doesn’t faze him. They tie up and Wilson falls. I think Wilson took that round.
Round 8-Fortuna staggers Wilson with a short left hook and Wilson takes another standing eight count. Fortuna pops him again with a straight left at the end of a flurry of punches and we have our first knockout of the night. Fortuna looked sharp.
