Hector Munoz v. Shaun Porter

Prospect “Showtime” Shaun Porter impressed on the undercard of ShoBox Friday night but my main takeaway from this fight was that Hector Munoz is one bad dude. Despite being repeatedly tagged with heavy shots to the face and body Munoz never stopped coming during the welterweight contest, refusing to back down even after a headbutt from Porter caused a gusher on his right temple covering his face in crimson and obscuring his vision.

Munoz is known for having a strong chin and he did nothing to disprove that notion on Friday night. While he may lack the technique to be a truly elite contender, he deserves a permanent place on premium cable testing young fighters who’ve yet to prove they have what it takes to go the distance. If the ref hadn’t stopped the fight in the ninth I have no doubt Munoz would have gone the distance, but his corner should have thrown in the towel much earlier.

Porter was certainly tested, but he passed with good marks showing patience, power and more than a little slickness while dismantling Munoz. His ascent up the welterweight ranks should continue as planned, though he’s probably still a couple years away from contender status.

One other note, the referee was a little standoffish for my liking during the fight, Porter had Munoz beaten in the fifth round and there was no reason to let it go for as long as it did.
