Hector Lombard Tests Positive For Steroids, Fight with Rory MacDonald Scrapped
In news even less surprising than Nick Diaz testing positive for reefer, today the world’s most implausibly shredded 37-year-old Hector Lombard has finally been caught taking steroids.
When people say Anderson Silva doesn’t really look like a guy that’s juicing, what they mean is that he never looked like Hector Lombard.
How the news came out was strange to say the least. Journalist Ariel Helwani, practically a UFC employee at this point, told Hector that his fight had been scrapped via Twitter:
Just spoke to @hectorlombard briefly. He said he had no idea his fight vs. MacDonald was off. “I’m in shock,” he said. More soon, hopefully.
Of course Hector had no idea, because why would anyone tell him his fight was scrapped or that he tested positive before telling members of the press, right? So Hector’s all up on Twitter saying he had no idea why the fight was scrapped and it seemed like Rory must have gotten injured. It’s not uncommon for fighters to learn things from Twitter rather than the UFC.
Does that sound weird? It gets weirder.
The Nevada State Athletic Commission has had the results since January 13th. The fight was announced January 17th. No one has really commented as of yet, but it appears that either the NSAC didn’t bother to tell Hector Lombard or the UFC about the test result until yesterday, or the UFC has known about the results for the last month and booked the fight anyway (which seems unlikely).
If it is the NSAC again failing to do its job, which looks likely at this point, the State of Nevada should think about firing everyone responsible because this is a ridiculous level of incompetence at this point. Anyone in the private sector who failed to do his or her job this spectacularly would have been fired long ago.
This has been a rough month for MMA, with four high profile fighters getting popped for drugs: two for recreational drugs and two for performance-enhancing drugs. Unsurprisingly, we’re not too excited for many of the cards this year other than UFC 185.
