Three members of Guyana’s Commonwealth Games team left their group at a New York airport, sparking concern that U.S. officials will be reluctant to approve transit visas for other Guyanese athletes.

A team official says three amateur boxers – Clevon Rock, Devon Boatswain and Dexter Jordan – abandoned coaches and teammates at New York’s Kennedy International Airport. The team was returning to Guyana after the recent New Delhi games.

Junior Sports Minister Steve Ninvalle on Tuesday said their refusal to get on a plane back to Guyana is “a disgrace not only to boxing but sports in this country in general.”

In recent years, U.S. officials have rejected visa applications for Guyanese athletes because of fears they would not return.
