Eddie Alvarez is your new UFC Lightweight Champion
I did not see this one coming, but I am always glad when an American gets a belt. Alvarez has not looked particularly impressive during his UFC stint against admittedly strong opposition. He lost to Cerrone and won two close decisions over Anthony Pettis and Gilbert Melendez (on PEDs, was Gilbert). Not the greatest resume to get a title shot, but Eddie has been at the top of the division for years and his boxing really shined tonight.
Alvarez landed a huge right hook with a little more than two minutes left and then kept pouring it on. Don Anjos has a ridiculous chin and took a ton of punishment, actually falling on top of Eddie after a flying knee attempt, but he was massively concussed and was operating on nothing but brainstem and instincts. He was able to work back to his feet, but it seemed like Eddie landed another two dozen significant strikes before Herb Dean waved it off.
