Don George Bombs Da Beast

Chicago super middleweight prospect Don “Da Bomb” George pulled his career back up off the mat with an emphatic first-round stoppage of Cornelius White at Bally’s, Atlantic City Friday night on ShoBox.

Coming off a brutal loss to Francisco Sierra last July, George suggested before the fight that another loss may compel an early end to his boxing career.

“Coming off my first loss, this is a must win fight for me,” George said. “If I lose, the odds are I won’t be boxing much longer. I don’t want to be an opponent.”

But instead he was backflipping in victory after just two minutes of action. George opened up by measuring White and followed with a straight right that shattered the Houston native’s illusion of invulnerability. White went down hard and rose uneasily only to find himself on the receiving end of a continuous onslaught from George.

The Chicagoan pounced, throwing caution to the wind as he sensed his opponent’s inability to respond. After the flurry resulted in two additional knockdowns before referee Randy Neumann was forced to call an end to the fight.

In his first true test, the previously unbeaten White (16-1 15 KOs) failed to live up to his moniker or his promise before the fight that “the world will see the Beast is coming.”

Instead it was George who fulfilled his vow to take White into deep water and drown him, though arguably White failed to get past the shallows. It was a moment of redemption for George, who if nothing else ensured himself another big fight and the ability to once again walk the Windy City’s streets with his head held high.

George best described the fight’s potential impact himself, though the value of a win against a previously untested prospect should not be overestimated. The win extends George’s career, but stiffer tests still await him before he reaches true contender status. Still, it seems fitting to close with his forceful reminder just to merit coverage is an achievement not to be derided.

“These laptop tough guys who have me in the right column will see I’m a world class fighter and not a ‘B’ guy.”
