Jose Aldo dove in punching and Conor McGregor knocked him out with the first punch he landed in the main event of UFC 194 on Saturday night in Las Vegas.

This was the first loss for Aldo since two thousand-fucking-five. His first knockout loss ever. Aldo actually landed a punch on Conor, but he was out by the time it landed, a split-second too late. Conor landed one hammer fist before the fight was waved off. One of the most shocking results I’ve ever seen in MMA. The Irish must have cleaned up on that one at the sportsbook.

In other news, Luke Rockhold defeated the previously undefeated Chris Weidman in devastating fashion. It all went downhill for Weidman in the second round when he attempted a wheel kick. Rockhold mounted him and landed punches from the full mount for a straight minute while referee Herb Dean looked on in an extremely generous mood.  After that it was all over for Rockhold; the next time he was mounted, Herb Dean didn’t give him as much leeway and waved the fight off, which was an excellent call.

In a fight that was less exciting than I expected Yoel Romero defeated Ronaldo Jacare Souza by split decision. We had Souza winning 29-28, but Romero clearly won the first round (although I am surprised on judge gave him a 10-8) and the second round was a snoozer, so this was not the worst outcome.

In a fight that was more exciting than I expected, Demian Maia defeated Gunnar Nelson by lopsided decision. Maia was able to stay on top and rain down blows for pretty much the whole fight.

Max Holloway was too quick for Jeremy Stephens. He won a pretty clear decision.

So what’s next for Conor?  He should be fighting Frankie Edgar early next year if there’s any justice in the world.
