Former Michigan wide receiver Braylon Edwards announced his release from the San Francisco 49ers on Tuesday morning via Twitter.

“I was released today by the 49ers due to my injury that required more time to rehab and hasn’t allowed me to re-sync with the offense,” Edwards tweeted.

The Detroit Public School League standout injured his knee against the Cowboys in September and missed time due to surgery, limiting him to nine games and just 15 catches this season. He elaborated on his statement shortly afterward.

“I wish the 49ers organization the best of luck during the Playoffs,” Edwards added. “I will be working hard this off season to strengthen my knee and prepare for the 2012 season. Thanks for your continued support and for being such loyal fans.”

The move is the latest blow in a career that has been plagued by inconsistency and dropped balls. Selected third overall by the Cleveland Browns, Edwards reportedly wore out his welcome in Ohio after clashing with members of LeBron James’ entourage. A two-year stint with the Jets came to an early end last year after Gang Green decided to pursue Plexico Burress in the offseason, leading Edwards to the Bay Area and primary role with fellow Wolverine Jim Harbaugh’s reinvigorated squad.

Unfortunately the chemistry between Edwards and QB Alex Smith never developed due to his injuries and inexplicable inability to hang on to the football. Known for making circus catches down the field during his maize-and-blue days, Edwards has a penchant for missing easy grabs due to a lack of concentration. His size, physical gifts and blocking ability should help him find employment again provided he’s healthy, but it’s clear now he will never live up to the promise that made him a finalist for the Heisman trophy.

It’s also notable that Edwards now sits well-behind former teammates Steve Breaston and Jason Avant on the receiving leader boards, as his former understudies have grown into crucial roles for the Chiefs and Eagles respectively. It’s impossible to know for certain how good a college player will be as a professional, but in this case it’s clear  Braylon’s immense self-regard hasn’t helped. At least he put some of that bonus money to good use.
