Alistair Overeem vs Fabricio Werdum

June 19th, 2011 8:49pm by Stiff Jab Tumblr

Alistair Overeem (right) is gigantic and if he can keep this on the feet he should be able to win. We don’t think Overeem will make the same mistake Fedor made and fall into Werdum’s guard.

Werdum should not be counted out though. He is a big guy and hasn’t lost since he fought Dos Santos, who has been killing everyone h’s faced. Also, Werdum has already beatem Overeem. Hopefully he will bring some takedowns so we don’t have to watch him flopping on to his back.

Overeem has his shirt off now and is absolutely gigantic.  We wouldn’t be surprised if he came into the ring at 280. Round-by-round updates after the jump:

Round 1-Werdum throws a high kick at the defending K-1 champ. That didn’t look too graceful. Werdum shot for the takedown and didn’t come close. Overeem catches a kick and drops Werdum to his feet.

Werdum does a somersault after Overeem decflines to fall into his guard. It annoys me when BJJ guys pull this bullshit. Werdum lands a punch. He has another takedown easily stuffed. This is just embarrassing.

Werdum grabs Overeem and pulls him down. Overeem just stands up. Overeem is so much stronger and isn’t going to chase Werdum down to the ground. He lets him stand again. Werdum just landed two shots to Overeem’s face. He falls down, does a backward Somersault when Overeem would follow him.

Overeem lands a nice left hook. Werdum falls down but Overeem lets him stand again. Overeem’s defense is really suspect and Werdum is landing shots to the face. Wondering whether Overeem is so certain of Werdum’s lack of punching power that he isn’t even really bothering to move.

Werdum begs Overeem to come to the ground, putting his hands together as though praying. Reem is following Werdum around the ring. Overeem goes to the ground as he seems to decide there isn’t enough time left for him to get subbed. Hope the next round is more exciting.

Round 2-Werdum tries to clinch and throw knees but Overeem gets the better of him. Werdum landing more shots, but they don’t have any power behind them. Werdum catches Overeem’s foot and gets him to the ground, but Overeem gets up. Werdum landing some serious shots.

Werdum is taking his time getting up. Overeem starting to really land power punches.  Werdum isn’t looking too bad on the feet but there is something wrong with him. He looks really tired and is just catching his breath on the ground now.

Overeem gets right back to business and starps ripping on Werdum before finally falling into the BJJ Champ’s guard. Werdum trying to throw his legs up for a triangle but Overeem defended it nicely, stood up, and makes Werdum get up.

Werdum gets up slowly. The ref should really do something about it. Reem catches Werdum with a knee and Werdum gets up very slowly again. This fight fucking stinks. It’s the end of round 2 and Werdum looks like he’s just run an ultramarathon. We really don’t care for Reem, but we’d love to see him beat Werdum after this bullshit.

Round 3-Werdum actively striking, throwing a lot of knees and has Overeem pushed against the cage. Frank Shamrock is worried about Overeem getting tired even though he looks way better than the other fighter. (Ed’s note: This Frank Shamrock sounds like he should hang out with Joe Morgan and Matt Millen.)

Overeem clipped in the head again and pulls guard. Overeem is in Werdum’s guard. Werdum really isn’t doing anything from the ground. Overeem tries to punch Werdum on the ground and lets him stand up yet again. Werdum landing shots to the face.

Can’t wait to see the Compustrike numbers on this fight because Werdum is landing a large percentage of his strikes but they just don’t have any power behind them. Crowd is chanting to stand them up but that’s the last thing Werdum wants as the ground is the only place he can win the fight.

Reem stands Werdum up again, scramble goes into a late knee bar attempt and Reem should have win that one easily. Terrible fight. Glad to see Werdum out of the running.

Judges score it 30-27 twice and 29-28 for Overeem.

Werdum needs to learn how to punch before his next fight. He actually landed more punches than Reem but none of them did any damage.
